THE PROJECTION BOX ESSAY AWARDS 2008-2009
for research into popular optical media before 1900

RULES

1. Before submitting your work and application form, you must send an email to the administrator to request an Author Reference Number. A return email will give details of how to submit your essay(s) and illustrations electronically. This is the advised method for submissions. No electronic submission will be accepted without your unique reference number. Print the application form, complete and sign it, and mail or fax to the address shown. Co-authors should each submit their own form.
2. If you are unable to send your essay electronically, then mail one typed hard copy together with the application form to the address shown.Your name, reference number and contact details must appear at the bottom of the essay's title page. Send by Registered Post or keep a Certificate of Posting. Do not fax essays. Handwritten essays are not acceptable and will not be submitted to the judges.
3. Notes and references must be included at the end of your essay.
4. The application form must be signed and dated, with a declaration that the essay is the sole work of the author(s) and has not previously been published. Unsigned or incomplete application forms will not be accepted and essays will not be submitted to the judges.
5. The deadline for submissions is 24 January 2009. No entry will be considered if received after this date. No liability for postal delays will be accepted by PB Awards.
6. The judges may decide not to award a first prize if there is no outstanding essay which they consider meets the appropriate criteria for publication. The judges' decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
7. No out-of-pocket expenses may be claimed by authors under any circumstances.
8. No copies of essays can be returned.
9. The winners and runners-up will be notified by 16 March 2009.
10. The winning entry will be published in an issue to be decided by the editors of the Routledge journal Early Popular Visual Culture. If necessary, the essay may be edited in consultation with the author.
11. A list of winners and a list of all the titles of judged entries will be published on the website by 31 March.
