ABOUT THE PROJECTION BOX The Projection Box, a small independent publishing partnership, was set up in 1994 by Stephen Herbert and Mo Heard. We publish, distribute and promote books and CD-roms on aspects of early film, pre-cinema and popular culture. Current titles can be viewed here. We are keen to encourage people in the re-examination of 'pre-cinema' and early film histories, and hope that this award will be a useful gateway for anyone with a passion for these subjects - from professional archivists to amateur film historians; art-subject specialists and collectors. For many years we have been supported in our publishing venture by friends and colleagues in the field, who display such a wide range of knowledge and have been so generous in sharing their research projects. We don't know how much information is still out there waiting to be discovered; for not only the continuing analysis of early optical media from around the world, but also for the possibilities in re-assessing the inventors, their technology, the aesthetics, the audiences, the economics, the showmen and their real-life dramas. We look forward to the prospect of finding further new ideas, new stories and new research talent. THE JUDGES FOR THE PROJECTION ESSAY AWARDS 2008 - 2009
